Mesh WiFi vs. Range Extenders: What Actually Works

A plug-in extender looks cheaper on the box. Here is what it actually costs you.

Range extenders and mesh systems both promise to fix WiFi dead zones, but they solve the problem in very different ways — and only one of them scales with a growing smart home. A range extender picks up your existing WiFi signal and rebroadcasts it, usually on a new network name. That means your phone or a smart device has to manually disconnect from the router and reconnect to the extender as you move around — and most won't switch until the original signal is nearly gone, which is exactly when smart devices start dropping commands. A mesh system is built differently: every node — router and satellites — shares one network name and talks to the others directly, so devices roam between nodes automatically and invisibly. Mesh nodes are also placed deliberately, based on an actual walkthrough of the home, rather than plugged into whichever outlet happens to be free. For a handful of laptops watching Netflix, an extender can be good enough. For a home with a dozen or more always-connected smart devices — lights, locks, sensors, cameras, thermostats — mesh is the only setup that keeps all of them reliably online at once.
